3 Mistakes People Make with Zakah

Let's make sure you don't do them

Assalamu Alaikum girlie🌸

Ramadan’s around the corner, many of us are preparing to read the Qur’an more, make lots of dua, be generous, and level up spiritually this year. Allahumma barik!

We’re also thinking about the 3rd pillar of Islam: zakah!
This is an obligation tied directly to our wealth that Allah has blessed us with.

And in trying to fulfill this obligation, some people make mistakes.

Here are 3 examples:

1ļøāƒ£ Delaying Zakah to give it in Ramadan

Ramadan is a beautiful time to be generous. The reward for our good deeds is multiplied!

But zakah is due one lunar year from the date your zakat-able assets reach the nisaab (i.e. minimum threshold). If your zakah is due before Ramadan and you delay it unnecessarily every year just to give it in Ramadan, that delay matters.

Zakah is not just charity. It is an obligation with a timeline for when it should be paid.

2ļøāƒ£ Only counting cash

Many people think Zakah only applies to what’s in their savings account.

Zakah can apply to other assets like:
• gold
• investments
• business inventory, etc

Someone may think they owe Zakah on a small amount of cash, while a large portion of their zakat-able assets aren’t even being considered. That’s a problem!

3ļøāƒ£ Ignoring nisaab

Some people assume, ā€œI’m not rich, so Zakah doesn’t apply to me.ā€

Zakah is not based on a feeling. It’s based on whether your Zakatable wealth is above a minimum threshold called nisab for a full lunar year.

Without checking this properly, people can miss their obligation for years without realizing.

If you’re reading this and feeling uneasy, pause.

This is about knowledge, so we can worship Allah properly and fulfill a pillar of our deen the right way.

That’s why I want to share this with you:
