Is Life Insurance Halal?

Assalamu Alaikum girlie 💐

I’ll admit it - insurance is one of those topics I’ve avoided talking about for over a year. Not because it’s boring (ok… a little boring), but because it’s messy. Shariah-wise, financial-wise, just… yeah.

But I get questions and have discussion about it, so I’ve been digging in to find out what’s up. And what I found? 😬
Not great! Keep reading…

Here’s the problem:

Conventional insurance has a few things✨ things we don’t mess with:

  • Ribaa (interest): Your money is being invested in non-shariah compliant assets. No thank you.

  • Gharar (excessive uncertainty): You’re paying regularly for a “maybe” payout. Not knowing when or if you’ll get one.

  • Maysir (gambling): it resembles gambling: you hope for no claim, the insurer hopes you never claim. And as they say, the house always wins

And that’s why any conventional life policy - even if it “protects” you - is considered haram by many respected scholars including Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen and Shaykh Bin Baz (source: Salafi Centre, Islamqa).

So… what is the halal alternative to insurance?

Say hello to Takaful 👋🏽
Takaful isn’t just “Islamic insurance” - it’s a completely different concept at its core.

Instead of a for-profit company taking your premiums and investing them (often in interest-based assets 🤢), Takaful is a community-based model.

Here’s the gist of it:

  • Members contribute to a shared pool.

  • When someone in the group needs support (e.g. death), the funds are used to help them.

  • It’s not a contract for profit - it’s tabarru’ (a voluntary donation).

  • The operators (aka the folks running the pool) are compensated for managing it - not for risk transfer like conventional insurance.

This structure makes Takaful permissible according to many scholars (source: IslamQA)

Do Such Solutions Exist?

Enter Takadao’s LifeDAO, a crypto-powered life protection alternative I’ve actually joined- and have been loving.

Here’s why it makes sense:

  • It’s community-based: your contributions are like donations pooled to support one another-not profit extraction.

  • No interest, no gambling, no hidden agenda just transparent, community-based protection with smart contracts handling payouts.

  • Built on blockchain, so you can see where your money is, how it's used, and when it’s dispatched - no shady insurance admin playing games.

It’s live and global - you can join today with just $25. Join the movement

So guess what?

I’m bringing in Shahd Abdelhadi from Takadao for a special guest episode of If I Were You show this Friday, August 23rd. We’ll get into:

  • How Takadao actually works (no, you don’t need to be a tech bro)

  • Investing in crypto

  • And what YOU need to know before getting locked into anything

If you’ve ever wondered how takaful or crypto work, this is it!

And yes, I’ll be asking all the questions you're probably thinking.

You’ve got this,

Fatimah💎
