The 2 Extremes: Spendthrifts & Hoarders

Overspending and over-saving are both symptoms, not solutions.

Assalamu Alaikum girlie! 🌸

This one might sting a little… but hear me out:

“Some of you are treating your paycheck like a clearance sale...
Others haven’t bought a pair of socks since 2019.”

Let’s be honest- when it comes to money, most of us fall into one of two extremes:

🛒 The Spendthrift: money burns a hole in your wallet
💰 The Hoarder: money makes you feel safe, so you cling to it

And here’s the kicker: both are rooted in fear.

Yup. Even the ones who look “disciplined” or “frugal” on the outside may be driven by the same emotional baggage as the girlie who can't stop impulse buying on Amazon.

Let’s break down the extremes:

🛍️ The Spendthrift

You love a lil’ treat. You romanticize life. And you’ve never met a sale you didn’t feel personally invited to.

But beneath the aesthetic purchases and “I deserve this” moments… there's often:

  • Emotional avoidance

  • A scarcity mindset (buy it now or you’ll never have it)

  • Overcompensating for other stressors or pain

You’re not irresponsible - you’re likely overwhelmed, tired, or seeking joy in the only way that feels accessible right now.

🧠 Ask yourself:

“Am I spending because I actually want/need this or because I’m trying to escape something else?”

💼 The Hoarder

You check your savings app like it’s IG. You get anxious spending money even on things you need.

But behind that tight grip on your finances might be:

  • Past financial trauma

  • Fear of losing control

  • Beliefs like, “If I let go even a little, it’ll all fall apart”

And while saving is wise (you know I’m team Emergency Fund all day), saving without ever enjoying is just fear in a hoodie.

🧠 Ask yourself:

“Am I saving out of wisdom - or is this based on fear that I’ll never have enough/ something will always come up?”

The Solution = Balance, not shame.

💡 Spending isn’t immoral.
You can enjoy your money and still be a good, responsible, and high-achieving human being. As long as it’s not wasteful or rooted in arrogance? It’s a blessing.

💡 Saving isn’t a virtue if it’s rooted in fear.
True tawakkul means trusting that Allah will continue to provide - not hoarding everything out of panic. Remember: wealth comes from Allah, not just your restraint. Don’t place your limitations on Allah

💡 Prioritizing is key = intentionality.
If you have debt, don’t have an emergency fund, or aren’t investing - it’s not the time to be “living your best life and traveling the world”. These are the core of your financial plan and skipping those to have fun makes you very vulnerable. Get those knocked out have the rest of your life to live!

Islam isn’t about extremes. Our deen is the middle path. That includes your money.

You’re allowed to enjoy the halal things in life.
You’re also expected to prepare and plan responsibly.
The goal is peace, not pressure.
