The Uncomfortable Truth About Debt

Your path to debt freedom

Assalamu Alaikum girlie! 🌸

Can we talk about something spicy today?
Debt culture.

Not the “I accidentally overspent” debt.
I’m talking about the loud, shiny, marketed-as-a-flex kind of debt.

If you’ve been anywhere near finance spaces especially in the US, you’ve heard it:

“Use OPM (i.e. other people’s money) to get ahead.”
“Debt is a tool. Everyone has it.”
“Why are you paying off low interest debt? Leverage it!”

And I get it. The messaging is everywhere. People make it sound like if you’re not playing the arbitrage game, you’re somehow behind.

But here’s the part nobody wants to say out loud:

Just because a ‘strategy’ works for some people doesn’t mean it’s good for your soul.

What Islam Says

Islam doesn’t treat debt like a lifestyle accessory.
This isn’t “get the car, go into debt for it, same vibe.”

The Prophet ﷺ warned us that a believer’s soul is held back until their debts are settled or paid on his behalf. [Narrated by Abu Hurairah in At-Tirmidhi]
Let that settle on your heart for a sec!

Plus, he didn’t pray janazah for someone who owed just two dinars until Abu Qatadah, a companion promised to cover it. [Narrated by Salama bin Al-Akwa in Sahih Bukhari]

If that doesn’t make you rethink the whole “debt is power” narrative… girl.

We are living in a world that glamorizes what our deen teaches us to tread with caution.
So we have to pause and ask: is it really worth it?

And listen, I am not playing the shame game- life happens, and sometimes we make certain decisions because things are tough. I see you! You’re navigating a system literally designed to pull you into debt.

Credit cards. Buy now pay later. Medical bills. Emergency expenses.
It happens fast. Islam has given us guidance for a reason.

Here’s what we can take from this:

Our goal shouldn’t be to play the OPM game to build wealth.
Our goal is to free our souls, free our futures, and align the wealth Allah has given us with our values.

And it is possible.
I’ve seen people clear debts they were once burdened by.
I’ve watched the shift when they felt that weight finally lift.
