🚨URGENT: 2 Billion People's Data Might Be Stolen

Assalamu Alaikum Girlie, đźŚş

Recent news has shaken Americans!! Reports suggesting that around 2.9 billion people might have had their personal information stolen in a massive data breach.

This includes Social Security numbers, full names, addresses, and even information about family members. (CNBC, 2024).

I know this is scary but I’ve got you covered. In today’s newsletter, I’ll go over:

  • 📢 What happened in this data breach?

  • 🔍 What should you do next to protect yourself?

  • 🛡️ How can you safeguard your personal information in the future?

Let’s jump in👇

What Happened? đź“°

According to CNBC, in April 2024, a background check company- National Public Data, allegedly failed to protect the sensitive information it gathered.

This has potentially put all Americans at risk, with their Social Security numbers and other personal details now in the hands of hackers. Experts warn that if this breach is as severe as it seems, it could affect almost everyone.

Your social security number being stolen means others can open accounts, take out loans, etc. in your name- this can massively destroy your financial future!

What Should You Do Next? đźš¨

  1. Freeze Your Credit ❄️

    • Freezing your credit is the single most important step you can take. It limits access to your credit reports, making it harder for bad actors to open accounts in your name.

    • You can request a credit freeze for free through Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

  1. Watch Out for Phishing Scams ⚠️

  • Be cautious when opening emails or clicking links related to your credit. Make sure you’re dealing with the legitimate credit bureaus and not a lookalike site operated by hackers.

  1. Strengthen Your Online Security đź”’

  • Use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. Consider using a password manager like LastPass to help generate and store these passwords.

  • Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) like Duo Mobile on all your important accounts. MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring two or more steps to gain access to your account.

  1. Consider Dark Web Monitoring đźŚ‘

  • While this won’t prevent identity theft, it can alert you when your information appears on the dark web, allowing you to take immediate action.

Why It Matters đź’ˇ

This breach is a powerful reminder that our personal data is always at risk. Once your information is out there, you’re vulnerable possibly for a LONG time.

Freezing your credit and tightening your online security can’t undo the breach, but they can help you minimize the damage and protect your financial future🛡️
