You're out shopping... student loan news just heated up
Read this before January hits.
Assalamu Alaikum girlie! 🌸
While you’re taking advantage of EOY sales, hanging out with family, and convincing yourself you need one more item from Home Goods… the student loan tea just got hotter.
This week, the Department of Education confirmed that payroll deductions will resume for borrowers in default. They’ll start sending notices in January 2026.
Translation: if someone has not made payments on their federal student loans for 270 days (~9 months), the government can automatically take a portion of their paycheck to cover missed payments. They can with seize up to 15% of your after-tax income t put toward your debt.
This isn’t drama. It’s not fear-mongering. It’s facts.
Now, before your brain jumps to worst-case scenarios, let’s be clear:
If you’ve brushed your student loans under the rug, this isn’t an “I’m a failure!” moment.
It’s a reminder of something we already know but don’t always love thinking about:
Student loans don’t disappear just because other parts of life get exciting.
Life gets busy after graduation. Especially around this time of year.
This is where a lot of Muslim women fall into the “I’ll deal with it later” camp.
Not because you’re irresponsible.
But because you say “I have bigger things on my mind right now”.
You’re working. Living life. Showing up for family.
Your finances aren’t really a mess. You’re just… avoiding this one thing.
Which works… Until it doesn’t.
